The Malta Co-operative Federation (MCF) welcomes the recent announcement by the Malta Business Registry (MBR) confirming that, with effect from 13th April 2026, the Office of the Co-operatives has been relocated to the Malta Business Registry.
MCF views this development as a positive and important step forward for Malta’s co-operative sector. The transition is expected to enhance efficiency, improve accessibility, and streamline both the registration process for co-operatives as well as ongoing reporting requirements.
This move also marks an important step towards further mainstreaming the co-operative business model in Malta; recognising co-operatives not only as community-driven organisations, but also as a credible, modern and viable alternative to other forms of business enterprise, including partnerships and companies.
Another significant aspect of this transition is the adoption of the BAROS system, which reflects a clear commitment towards digitalisation and modernisation. MCF believes that these improvements can contribute meaningfully to a stronger administrative framework for co-operatives, while also making procedures more practical and efficient for both existing and future co-operative societies.
MCF looks forward to continued collaboration with the relevant authorities and to seeing these changes further support the development, sustainability and visibility of co-operatives in Malta.
According to the official notice issued by the Co-operatives Board and the Registrar of Companies, all registrations and notification filings may now be carried out through the BAROS system.
The new official email address for the Office of the Co-operatives is [email protected].
The new registered address of the Co-operatives Board is:
Malta Business Registry
AM Business Centre
Triq il-Labour
Żejtun ZTN 2401
MCF will continue to follow these developments closely and remains committed to supporting co-operatives in adapting to this new phase, which promises greater efficiency, improved systems, and a stronger institutional framework for the sector.
