Co-operatives: The power to act for a sustainable future This is the theme chosen for the 2016 International Day of Co-operatives on the 2nd July 2016. During the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015, world leaders committed to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, outlining an ambitious vision for a better world. The students from the Liceo Scientifico Arcidosso of Grosseto Italy visit the Federation
A number of students from the the Liceo Scientifico Arcidosso of Grosseto Italy visited the Malta Co-operative Federation in Valletta on the 18th May 2016. Mr John Mallia and Mr Rolan Micallef Attard presented a number of videos and gave an overview of the international and local scenarios of the co-operative movement. The students, who were accompanied by their teachers, showed great interest in the co-operative model of doing business. Minister responsible for co-operatives promises to remedy injustices
Minister Christian Cardona has recently publicly promised remedies to those who have suffered injustices. To date the Minister has talked the talk but hasn't yet walked the walk with respect to the lack of funding to the Malta Co-operative Federation (MCF). Meanwhile, the Central Co-operative Fund Committee, the members of which were appointed by Minister Cardona, continue to fund the other co-operative federation. Two newly registered co-operative societies join Malta Co-operative Federation
On February 2, 2016 the Council of the Malta Co-operative Federation approved two newly registered co-operative societies as new Member Societies of the Federation. The co-operatives are: Koperattiva Youtheme Ltd and Tourist Information and Services Co-op Ltd The CEO of the Federation, Mr Rolan Micallef Attard welcomed the co-operative societies to the Federation. Mr Micallef Attard expressed his satisfaction that potential co-operative societies are seeking the assistance of the Malta Co-operative Federation through the now proven start-up hand-holding service which commenced in 2013, soon after the Federation's inception. Federation’s Members vote to step up action to end discrimination
Photo: Ruben Overend The Malta Co-operatives Federation’s member societies present at the AGM held on the 15th January 2016, have unanimously authorized the Federation’s Council to take all the necessary action to protect their interests and end the discrimination against MCF. The very well attended AGM of the Malta Co-operative Federation was also addressed by the Federation's lawyers Dr Leonard Caruana and Dr Michael Camilleri.
