New Co-operatives Board 2015 – 2016
The composition of the Co-operatives Board as announced on this website (now removed) and as announced in Government Notice No. 782 in the Government Gazette No. 19463 of the 14th August 2015 has been repealed by Government Notice No. 898 in the Government Gazette No. 19475 of the 18th September 2015. The error in Government Notice No. 782 has now been rectified thus reinstating Mr. Carmelo Bugeja on the Co-operatives Board formerly erroneously omitted. Ramla Sunbeds and Umbrellas Co-op Limited join the Federation
On September 1, 2015 the Council of the Malta Co-operative Federation approved Ramla Sunbeds and Umbrellas Co-op Limited as a new Member Society of the Federation. The founder members of this newly registered co-operative are all from the island of Gozo. The co-operative offers sunbeds and umbrellas for lease to beach goers of Ramla Bay, at Xaghra Gozo. The founder members who have been working in competition against each other will now bring together under one name individual experience in this sector. MCF’s feedback to the White Paper on the proposed Social Enterprise Act
The Malta Co-operative Federation has taken up the Malta Government's invitation to provide feedback on the White Paper and Social Enterprise Bill launched in June 2015. The Federation is pleased to note that Government is addressing this long awaited legislation. The proposed Bill is intended to create a structure whereby Maltese social enterprises will be regulated and recognised as authentic social enterprises. The MCF has submitted its comments and recommendations on the White Paper and the proposed Social Enterprise Act as it is being proposed by Government wherein it highlights the areas where the Federation disagrees categorically with the Bill, in particular that: social enterprises in Malta are to be distinguished by their legal form; limited [...]
ICA President Dame Pauline Green announces her early retirement
The International Co-operative Alliance announced the retirement of its President, Dame Pauline Green to take effect at the close of the Alliance’s general assembly in Antalya, Turkey, on 13 November 2015. The Malta Co-operative Federation is indebted to Dame Green for her numerous contributions to the Maltese co-operative movement prior and during her tenure as President of the Alliance.
Co-operatives and the Fair Society
This year’s theme for the International Day of Co-operatives is centred around the aspect of equality, and the role of co-operatives in making our societies fair and sustainable. With the advent of globalisation, there were dreams of a more equitable distribution of wealth, knowledge, people and technology. On the 24th June 2015 the Malta Co-operative Federation participated in a seminar and a number of workshops organised by SKOP under the title Post 2015 Development Agenda - How can we take action in Malta?
