On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the achievements of women in cooperatives and reaffirm our collective commitment to gender equality. This year’s theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Equality. Rights. Empowerment,” holds special significance as it marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, a landmark commitment to advancing gender equality worldwide. It is also an important moment to recognise the essential contributions of women to the cooperative movement—both historically and today.
Cooperatives have long been a platform for women’s empowerment, providing economic opportunities, fostering leadership, and promoting democratic participation. Since their inception, cooperatives have embraced the values of equality and inclusion, ensuring that women have a space to contribute, grow, and lead. Through collective action, cooperatives have helped break down barriers that restrict women’s full participation in society and the economy.
Xiomara Nuñez de Céspedes, Chair of the Gender Equality Committee of the International Cooperative Alliance, emphasised the significance of women’s role in cooperatives, stating:
“It is an opportunity to pay homage to all the women who, courageously and with determination, have made a difference in our lives and in our communities through their work and by supporting the social economy as the ideal channel for improving people’s quality of life.”
Throughout history, women in cooperatives have demonstrated resilience and determination, shaping their communities through innovation and leadership. From cooperative members and managers to policymakers and entrepreneurs, women continue to drive progress, creating more inclusive and sustainable economies. However, despite these achievements, challenges remain. Women still face disparities in wages, decision-making, and access to resources, making it imperative to strengthen cooperative policies that advance gender equality.
Nuñez de Céspedes also highlighted the need for continued efforts:
“It is vital to remember that gender equality is not only a matter of social justice, but also one of development and prosperity. When women enjoy equal opportunities, society as a whole benefits. Education, economic empowerment, and women’s involvement in politics are essential for building a more equitable and sustainable future.”
Gender equality is not just a matter of fairness; it is essential for social and economic progress. When women are empowered, entire communities benefit. Education, economic participation, and leadership opportunities for women are crucial for building a just and equitable future. Cooperatives, as democratic enterprises, provide a unique model for advancing these objectives by ensuring women’s voices are heard and valued in governance and decision-making processes.
On this International Women’s Day, we honour the courage and contributions of all the women who have made a difference through their involvement in cooperatives. Their dedication continues to inspire a more inclusive and fair society. As we celebrate the progress made, we also commit to furthering efforts to eradicate gender-based barriers, close the pay gap, and ensure that women have equal opportunities in all spheres of life.
As Nuñez de Céspedes aptly concluded:
“Women’s full participation in decision-making is fundamental for democracy to be exercised in full. Let us celebrate the achievements that have been made and reaffirm our determination to face the challenges that have yet to be overcome. May this day inspire us all to continue striving for a more just, inclusive, and equitable world for all women and girls.”
Let today be a reminder of the power of collective action and the role cooperatives play in achieving gender equality. Together, we will continue striving for a world where all women and girls can thrive, lead, and shape the future.
